Crowd Control & Safety Equipment Glossary

Welcome to SONCO's comprehensive glossary of terms used in the crowd control, event safety, and construction industries. This guide was created to help construction professionals, rental companies, and venue managers understand the most common terminology across our product categories. Each definition includes a short explanation and real-world context for where and how the item or concept is typically used.

A

Access Control

The process of managing and directing pedestrian or vehicle movement in a defined area. Common at construction sites, events, and venues where entry and exit points must be regulated with barriers or fencing.

Acoustic Barrier

A specialized dampening panel designed to reduce noise from construction areas where heavy equipment is used.

ADA Compliance

Refers to equipment and site layouts designed to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. This includes accessible pathways, proper spacing between barricades, and visual markers for individuals with disabilities.

ASTM Standards

Specifications set by ASTM International that define the quality and performance requirements for construction and safety materials. Many traffic and safety products follow these standards for consistency and durability.

B

Ballast Weight

A stabilizing component added to fences, barricades, or signs to prevent tipping. This is typically a sandbag, water weight, or molded base placed at the bottom of temporary fencing or barricades.

Barricade

A portable structure used to control crowds or direct pedestrian and vehicle movement. Barricades come in steel, plastic, and water-filled models, and are commonly used at construction sites, parades, concerts, and roadwork zones.

Barricade Classifications

Defined by MUTCD standards as Type I, II, or III based on the size of the reflective area and intended application. Type I and II are used for pedestrian and low-speed traffic control, while Type III is intended for road closures and highway applications.

Fence Screen

A fence screen is a fully customizable printed fabric designed primarily for branding and visual communication on temporary fences. It displays artwork such as sponsor graphics, project information, or safety messaging, while also helping with debris control and privacy. Fence screens use high-quality print processes that allow full color designs and large format imaging.

FHWA (Federal Highway Administration)

The U.S. government agency responsible for regulating national road safety standards, including MUTCD compliance for barricades and traffic control devices.

G

Galvanization

Galvanization is the process of applying a zinc coating to steel to protect it from corrosion. This is typically done through hot-dip application, where the steel is submerged in molten zinc for full surface coverage and long-term weather resistance.

Gate Panel

A hinged section of temporary fencing that provides controlled access to a job site or event area. Often secured with clamps and fitted with wheels for easy operation.

Ground Protection Mat

Ground protection mats are heavy-duty panels placed on soft or uneven surfaces to prevent rutting, soil displacement, or turf damage from vehicles and equipment.

H

High-Intensity Prismatic (HIP) Sheeting

A reflective material used on barricades, cones, and signs to improve visibility at night. It meets MUTCD standards for roadway use.

Hot-Dip Galvanization Process

A steel corrosion protection method where fabricated components are immersed in molten zinc, producing a metallurgical bond and layered zinc iron alloys. Hot-dip galvanized products are particularly durable and suited to outdoor, abrasive, and coastal environments.

J

Job Site Protection

The combination of barriers, fencing, and signage used to secure a construction site. It helps define boundaries, direct workers, and protect pedestrians from hazards.

M

MASH (Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware)

A federal standard that outlines how roadside safety devices should perform during vehicle impact testing. MASH-approved barricades and barriers are required for highway and work zone use.

Mesh Banner

A lightweight, perforated banner designed to allow airflow while displaying printed graphics. Ideal for fence installations and outdoor advertising.

The U.S. federal agency that sets safety regulations for workplaces, including construction and industrial environments. Many temporary fence setups are designed to meet OSHA guidelines for site safety.

P

Paint Viscosity

Refers to the internal resistance of a paint formulation to flow, affecting spray performance, film thickness, and line definition. High viscosity paints are thicker and suited for high-build applications, while low viscosity paints allow for finer spray patterns and faster application rates.

Parking Curb (Wheel Stop)

A solid rubber or concrete block placed in parking lots to prevent vehicles from rolling beyond a marked space. Reflective tape or cat-eye reflectors are often added for visibility.

Pedestrian Barrier

A modular barrier designed to direct foot traffic safely in high-traffic areas such as stadiums, sidewalks, and event entrances.

Perimeter Security

A physical boundary designed to restrict access to a site or event area. Temporary fences, barricades, and barriers all serve this function.

Plastic Barricade

A lightweight, weather-resistant barricade made from high-density polyethylene. Often water-fillable for stability, making it ideal for parking lots and low-speed traffic zones.

Post-Driven Fence

A semi-permanent fencing solution used for longer term construction projects where fence posts are driven directly into the ground. This installation method provides greater stability than base supported fencing and is well suited for locations with higher wind exposure.

Powder Coating

A finishing process in which powdered pigment is electrostatically charged and bonded to metal surfaces, then cured under heat. Provides uniform coverage, impact resistance, and color retention.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

A range of specialized clothing and equipment specifically designed to protect on-site personnel from injury.

Pre-Galvanization

Pre-galvanization refers to steel that is zinc-coated before fabrication, usually as part of the coil or sheet manufacturing process. The material is galvanized first, then cut, formed, or welded, which can leave exposed areas that may require secondary treatment.

Privacy Screen

A privacy screen is a non-customized or lightly customized fabric installed on fencing to increase privacy and control dust. It is available in preset colors and different opacity levels based on privacy and wind requirements. A logo variation, sometimes called a logo screen, can include simple company branding, but the print area and color options are limited compared to a full fence screen.
